COEX

Duncan began traveling to Korea on a semi-regular basis shortly after marrying Hyunmi Cho, in 1993. On breaks from family gatherings, he sought new subjects in the unfamiliar landscape.

When the COEX Mall opened in 1979, it was pronounced the largest underground shopping center in Asia, occupying the basement level of the sprawling World Trade Center in the Gangnam-gu district of Seoul. Duncan made multiple trips to COEX before he made his first photographs there.

In 2004, he started a new series of work that concentrates on the strangely colorful lighting, meticulously clean spaces, and the faces of isolated shoppers and staff members that inhabit COEX.

Duncan McCosker, 1944–2016: A Memorial Exhibition represents the first time that these works have been shown publicly as a large group.
